Paul has an enviable reputation for his knowledge and expertise in the chemical patent space, with an ability to instantly identify issues and develop management strategies to work around them, particularly in the scientific and R&D sectors where he has an in-depth understanding of business practices. In particular, Paul is known for his experience in dealing with the complex area of patent term extensions, and has co-authored the Australian chapter of the highly regarded 2015 NOMOS publication: Ergänzende Schutzzertifikate - Patent Term Extensions (ed. Arne Markgraf).
Highly regarded in the legal community for his guidance and testimony on complex litigation proceedings, Paul has a results oriented approach, focusing resources and optimising outcomes. His professional network extends around the world to research bodies as well as overseas associate firms, and has been established through years of travel and conferences.
He regularly publishes commentary on many IP developments and legal decisions that arise in SE Asia. The breadth of which extends across a range of technologies.

Prior to joining FB Rice, Paul worked for over ten years as an industrial chemist, principally in the pharmaceutical and health care industry before pursuing a career in the patent profession.
In 1984, Paul joined FB Rice and became a partner in the firm in 1989. He served as Managing Partner from 1995 to 2009, overseeing the expansion of the firm and a move to CBD premises. In that time, the partnership grew to 14 partners and 37 professionals, and the client list built to an impressive range of local and global manufacturers, software companies and global brand names.
