John has been practicing as a patent attorney for over 17 years. His practice is focused towards patent drafting and global prosecution of Australian originating research for local and overseas organisations. He has extensive experience across a range of chemical technologies including electroactive materials, mineral processing, polymeric coatings, composites, biomaterials, agrochemicals, food technology, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery technologies.
John is focused on ensuring patent strategies are individually tailored to align with his client’s commercial objectives to deliver commercial value and outcomes for his clients. He is committed to understanding the commercial and business objectives underpinning his client’s drive to seek patent assets.
His experience also involves considerable work with oppositions before the Australian (IP Australia) and New Zealand (IPONZ) Patent Offices, due diligence reports on patent portfolios, patent landscape assessments, validity opinions, infringement considerations, and freedom-to-operate advice.
John’s PhD studies involved the targeted organic synthesis of compounds of pharmaceutical interest. One area of his research involved targeted synthesis of platinum complexes, namely the use of carbohydrate groups to produce water soluble ferrocene analogues of cis-platin (a common chemotherapeutic agent). Another area of his research involved the stereo-selective targeted synthesis of compounds called angucyclinones (anti-bacterial agents) via kinetic resolution techniques involving borane catalysts. John’s academic teaching responsibilities at the University of Otago also provided extensive involvement in chemical process engineering.
John is a registered Patent Attorney and Legal Practitioner in Australia and New Zealand.
