James’ experience is primarily in the electronics field, ranging from telecommunications to consumer electronics, to cloud computing infrastructure, to software and more recently artificial intelligence. He provides opinions on patentability of borderline subject matter to shape client policies regarding when to file, where to file, and how best to present inventions.
He is able to grasp complex technical ideas quickly, and to relate those ideas to prevailing case law, patent office guidelines, and his own experience, in order to advise on protection strategies. By understanding clients' goals and commercial focus, James translates the intellectual aspects of patent prosecution into practical advice.
Beyond patents, James has experience in registered designs, advising clients on filing strategies and providing infringement and validity opinions.
His educational background is in Physics, and he spent the first 13 years of his career working in London as a UK & European patent attorney.
James is a registered UK patent attorney and has a dormant European registration.
