Known for his far sighted approach to managing intellectual property, Brett is highly regarded for his ability to understand and advise on IP in the context of a client’s overall business strategy. He brings to that advisory capacity a depth of understanding built up over many years working as a physicist and a patent attorney and honed by recent experience operating in an advisory capacity to a number of significant Australian and global entities.
Brett believes that patent and trade mark prosecution is only one aspect of a successful IP strategy. Equally important is the role that IP plays in developing a business, securing funding and building corporate assets. With the transition from the research bench to market becoming ever more complex, Brett sees the efficient management of intangible assets as vital to the success of any business, particularly those with a growth mandate and global aspirations.
A keen advocate of the importance of innovation and the sometimes crucial role IP plays in encouraging innovation, Brett has served as Chair of the AusMedtech Intellectual Property Expert panel, as well as a past-President of the Association of Intellectual Property Firms (AIPF), a global alliance of independent IP firms. He is passionate in seeing FB Rice regarded as the pre-eminent firm of patent and trade mark attorneys in the Asia-Pacific region. As Managing Partner, he serves a firm that is uninfluenced by the demands of external shareholders and is instead owned by the partners, all of whom are dedicated and experienced IP professionals.
Brett undertakes pro-bono work on behalf of the Northcott Foundation.
